Purple buildings are lined up in Okachimachi. These are famous discount stores called Takeya. These days they are full of foreigners.
Near Okachimachi Station on the JR Yamanote Line or Keihin-Tohoku Line, there is a famous shopping street called Ameya Yokocho (Ameyoko for short). Other than Ameyoko, there is a cheap discount store called Takeya east of Okachimachi Station.
Takeya was established as a pawn shop in 1947. Then it became big and started selling everything. There are eight Takeya buildings in Okachimachi, and they sell everything from sweets to furniture.
All Takeya buildings are dyed in purple. It’s the Takeya color. The plastic bags and the vending machines in front of Takeya buildings are also purple.
It is similar to Don Quijote and sells snacks, ingredients, cosmetics, stationery and clothes cheaply. Takeya also sells home appliances and furniture. Yes, there is everything you want to buy in Takeya.
These days Chinese and Korean visitors are increasing and the stores are full of people. It is good for tourists to buy things there because they have no time to go everywhere and at Takeya they can buy cosmetics and home applaiances together. For Chinese people, rice cookers, ceramic kitchen knives, cooling gel sheets, anti-itch creams, and whitening cosmetics are popular.
In front of Takeya buildings, shoppers overflow, and it is hard to walk through. Inside of these buildings, it seems like a battle scene. When you go shopping at Takeya, you should endure this chaos and confusion.
